Green Reading

The art of reading greens

In this post we focus on reading putts inside 10 ft.

First, the language

Read from the centre, or edge

For clarity, every read in this post is given twice: once from the centre of the hole, and once from the edge.

FROM CENTRE FROM EDGE centre of cup high-side edge aim point
The cup is 4.25 inches across, so the edge sits 2.125 inches from the centre — rounded to 2.1 inches throughout. Where a read comes in under that, the aim point is still inside the hole, and this post marks those separately.
The Numbers

Improve your green reading skills

Gain strokes by learning to read the subtle breaks on putts 10 ft and in.

Aim points from 2 to 9 ft, on a stimp 10 green, with an entry speed of 1 ft past the hole.

From the centre
Measured from the middle of the hole. The large figure in every cell.
Outside the edge
The same aim point, measured from the high‑side lip. The smaller lime figure.
Inside the edge
Break under 2.125 inches, so the aim point still sits within the cup. Shown in rust.

Example What would happen if you read them all straight

Aim at the centre of the hole on all 24 putts above — the whole table, every distance and every slope — and you would probably only make 3 of them.

Five of the twenty‑four putts inside 10 ft hit the hole, and two of those five need the ball to topple in off the lip — which asks for a slice of luck. Aimed at the centre of the hole and struck at a 1 ft past entry speed, the reliable count of made putts when hit straight is only three.

The importance of holing out inside 10 ft

Become solid from this range and the rest of your putting has something to stand on.

This is the most trainable range in golf. The reads are subtle rather than difficult, the strokes are short, and a player who learns to see the break here holes a meaningfully higher share of them. Here is what each one is worth in Strokes Gained.

The Art

Match the speed with the read

The same putt takes different break depending on how hard you hit it.

On a six‑footer the read moves from 10.0 inches to 4.7 inches on pace alone. Which is why a read without a pace attached to it is only half a read.

How to get better at it

The 2-4-6-8 drill covers this range: sixteen putts, two at each distance from 2 to 9 ft. Run it as a test before you change anything.

1 · Benchmark first

Play the sixteen as you normally would, reading each putt yourself. Log the Strokes Gained. That is your starting point, and without it you have nothing to compare against later.

2 · Tag the misses

For each putt you miss, record why. Three categories cover almost everything.

Read
Did you over or under read the break? Miss on the low side or the high side with the pace about right.
Speed
Your read was solid and the start line was good, but the speed did not match the read.
Line
Did the ball start left or right of your intended line? Tag left or right miss.

3 · Tag the break direction

Was the break left to right, or right to left? Tag each putt so the two directions can be compared — it shows you which side you are already strong on, and which one is worth the practice time.

Left to right
Tag every putt that breaks this way, made or missed.
Right to left
Tag every putt that breaks this way, made or missed.

4 · Identify patterns

One session will provide valuable feedback. Repeat the drill three or four times and you will see a pattern that can be analysed and trained.

After the drill a report is generated showing your miss tendencies, break type and strokes gained by distance — something you and your coach can work from directly.

5 · Use the AI Caddie to help with the read

Take the 2-4-6-8 drill again, this time using the AI Caddie to help read each putt.

The read sheet, printed

Every read in this post, and a great many more — 2 to 9 ft against 1–4% slope, across stimp 8 to 12. Three sheets, one for each entry speed. Print one for the bag or keep it on your phone.

Each figure is given twice — from the centre of the cup and from the edge — so whichever way you aim, the number is there.

Put a number on every read

The Putt Break Calculator gives you the aim point for any putt — distance, slope, green speed and entry speed — measured from the centre of the cup or from the edge.

Questions

Short putts and break

How much does a 6 ft putt break?

On a stimp 10 green at 1 ft past: 3.1 in on a 1% slope, 6.3 in on a 2%, 9.4 in on a 3%. Measured from the centre of the cup — take off 2.1 in for the aim point from the edge.

Can I aim straight at short putts?

Only inside about two feet. The cup hides roughly two inches of break and no more.

Do short putts break less than long ones?

Less in inches, but not less in proportion. And the hole is a fixed size, so a small error costs you more on a short putt, not less.

Why do my short putts miss low?

Usually under‑reading, sometimes under‑hitting. A putt struck softer than the pace you read for takes more break than you allowed. Match the read to the pace you actually intend to use.

I have done the drill more than three times and my score is not improving. What now?

Take a lesson. Bring the reports with you — the miss tendencies and strokes gained by distance give a coach something concrete to work from, and it is a far quicker route than guessing on your own.
