I built the LSR break calculator from the physics of a rolling ball. To pressure-test it, I checked it against one of the most respected green-reading methods in the game. Here's how close they came.
Any coach can publish a break chart. The real question is whether the numbers hold up. My break calculator doesn't come from a rule of thumb — it works out how far a putt curves from the physics of a ball rolling and decelerating across a slope, calibrated against verified reference data. But a model is only worth trusting if it agrees with what the best players in the world are actually reading.
So I looked for a strong, independent yardstick — and there's a good one. Tour Read®, the green-reading system from PGA Tour coach Ralph Bauer, is used by tour players and teaching pros and has a well-earned reputation for accuracy. It arrives at break a completely different way from my model. If my numbers and theirs landed in the same place, that would be real, independent confirmation my data is sound.
The two approaches couldn't be more different under the hood. My calculator solves the physics of the putt. The Tour Read method gets a player to a break figure from the length of the putt and the slope, in a few quick steps they can do on the course with nothing in their hands — no calculator required. One is a physics engine; the other is a field method trusted under tournament pressure.
In broad strokes, the Tour Read method reads a putt in three quick steps on the course:
Step off the length from ball to hole to get the distance.
Read the tilt underfoot and put a number on it — the slope in percent.
Combine distance and slope to arrive at the break, measured from the centre of the cup.
It's quick, repeatable, and holds up under pressure — which is exactly why it's earned its reputation.
There's one more difference worth naming, because it matters for reading the numbers below. Tour Read gives you the break to the centre of the cup — the apex distance from the middle of the hole. My calculator can give you that same centre figure, but it also reads to the edge of the hole, which is closer to the spot you actually aim at. The gap between the two is simply the hole's radius: a regulation cup is 4.25 inches across, so centre to edge is exactly 2.125 inches. To compare like with like, everything below is measured the same way — from the centre — so we're holding that difference aside and testing the break figures head to head.
If those two independent roads arrive at the same break, across every distance that matters, then it's not a coincidence — it means both are locked onto the real behaviour of the golf ball. So I lined them up, at 1% slope, from three feet all the way out to thirty.

Across the entire scoring range, my calculator and a tour-trusted method never disagree by more than seven-tenths of an inch — and by thirty feet they're all but identical, one-tenth of an inch apart. Two completely independent approaches, landing on the same read at every distance.

This is the point of the whole exercise. When a physics-based model and a method the best players in the world rely on agree this closely, you can stop wondering whether the numbers are accurate. They are. The LSR break calculator isn't a chart I made up — it's putting the same read in front of you that a tour-level system does, backed by the physics that explains why.
There's one more edge worth pointing out, and you can see it right in the table. A method you run in your head has to deal in round numbers — three inches, five, seven. My calculator isn't rounding. It gives the break to the decimal: 3.4, 5.3, 7.5. Same read, finer resolution — it catches the fraction of an inch a whole-number read has to let go. On a slick downhill slider where a quarter-inch is the difference between the centre of the cup and a lip-out, that resolution is the read.
And because my calculator is built on the physics, it goes further still. It adjusts for green speed and for the pace you roll the ball — the two things that move break the most, and the two things a single on-course figure has to hold fixed. It also hands you the read from the edge of the hole — where you actually aim — instead of leaving you to work back from the centre. Tour-trusted accuracy on the makeable putt, resolved to the decimal, in the reference that's easiest to use, with the precision to dial in your own greens.

Across every makeable distance from 6 to 30 feet, the LSR break calculator matches the break produced by Ralph Bauer's Tour Read method to within about half an inch, and to within a tenth of an inch at 30 feet. The two use completely different approaches, so the close agreement is strong independent confirmation that the LSR data is accurate.
They are calculated from the physics of a golf ball rolling and curving across a slope — how far it deflects for a given distance, slope and green speed — calibrated against verified reference data rather than estimated from a rule of thumb.
A single on-course figure has to assume one green speed and one pace. The Tour Read number is built around a putt rolled about a foot past the hole on a green of roughly stimp 10 — sensible defaults, but every green and every stroke is different. My calculator lets you set both.
You choose your entry speed — dying it at the hole, a foot past, or two feet past — and you choose your green speed across the stimp range. Both move the break a lot. Take that same 10-foot putt on a 1% slope: dying it at the hole breaks about 7 inches, but rolled two feet past it's nearer 4.6. Hold the pace steady and change the green from stimp 8 to stimp 11 and the break swings from about 4.7 inches to 6.5. Tour Read gives one number for all of it; my calculator gives you the one that matches the putt in front of you — which, on a real green, is the more accurate read.
